DESCRIPTION:
THE WORLD’S MOST UNUSUAL SMALL CAR - AND THE MEN BEHIND IT.
The remarkable DKW-750.
The car going aboard Pan Am’s new Cargo Clipper for a maiden flight to the United States looks at first glance like many another import that foreign car makers are funneling into the U. S. in increasing numbers.
In reality, it is a comfortable family car, far more substantial and promising than the average import, for it embodies engineering efficiencies seldom applied in automotive transportation.
Seven Moving Parts
The car has only seven basic moving engine parts: three pistons, three connecting rods, and one crankshaft. It has no valves, camshaft or timing gear. It has three cylinders that do the work of six conventional cylinders. Its front brakes never touch the wheels.
Yet, it travels at seventy miles per hour; it delivers traction on slippery surfaces where other cars cannot take hold; it stops with the assurance of a racing car; and it rides phenomenal distances on a single gallon of gasoline.
Three Cylinders = Six
There is no fundamental concept that makes the DKW so revolutionary. Rather, it is a combination of engineering concepts that sets it apart. The engine, for example, is a two-stroke cycle engine, which, very simply, means that a cylinder fires and drives in one full up-and-down action as against two in the conventional car. The engine, mounted in the front, is geared to the front wheels and moves the car by pulling it (front
wheel drive) instead of pushing it, with tremendously improved traction, surer control, less skidding. Front wheel drive also permits flat floors and an exceptionally large trunk.
Wheels Without Brakes
Brakes are set apart from the wheel in racing car fashion. They have immense finned drums, and because the wheels are relieved of so-called “dead” unsprung weight, cornering is extremely stable and stopping extremely sure.
The Men - The Idea
Behind the DKW’s design was the conviction that people want more value built into cars of extremely low price
(the DKW-750 is priced at 65 PO.E„ N.Y.); also that a return to simplicity in design and engineering would deliver the value by offering more efficient operation and easier, more trouble-free driving.
The men above of Germany’s Auto Union Co. are H. T. Muller. Managing Director; H. Winkler. Export Manager; Dr. W. Werner. President and designer of the car. DKW cars are distributed in the U.S.A. by Mercedes-Benz Sales, Inc., a subsidiary of the Studebaker-Packard Corp.. in South Bend, Ind. The DKW-750 is now being shown by DKW dealers throughout the U.S.
Major U.S. car attention today centers in the new compacts, but many believe that DKW’s “simplicity idea” may well be the next big area of motoring interest for prideful, economy-minded U.S. drivers.
